Sustainability at Oneta Resort

Solar Electricity

Almost all of the Oneta’s power needs are taken care of by the sun and wind. We have 3 separate solar power systems that provide most of the power needed at the resort. While we do still have generator backups, they are only used occasionally.

Carbon Offsets for all fossil fuel engines

The boat motors are the main source of carbon emissions at Oneta. We are in discussions with Torqeedo and Envoy to change out our gasoline-powered boat motors to fully electric outboards. However, getting this new technology to Fiji and having it installed correctly is proving somewhat difficult. Our hope is to make this important change by 2024 in order to reduce our carbon footprint to near zero.

In the meantime, we have researched verified carbon offsets to maintain carbon neutrality. We calculate our yearly carbon output and purchase these offsets. To maintain carbon neutrality for 2022 we have donated to the WithOneSeed Community Forestry Program.

We also encourage guests to offset their own carbon footprint generated by their plane flights to Oneta. Many airlines already provide these options which is an easy way to make sure that your vacation is carbon-neutral. If you’d like to contribute to a carbon offset program of your own choosing you can do that as well. To calculate the carbon footprint of your flight click here. After you calculate the carbon generated by your flight we recommend clicking on the button below where you can find a variety of carbon offsets projects that have been vetted and verified.

Waste Recycling

When you are on a small island like Ono, trash is an extremely important thing to manage well. All of the garbage that is produced at Oneta is sorted. Plastics, paper, glass and tin are packed into to large canvas containers and sent to Suva by ferry to be recycled. Food scraps are composted for the garden. Remaining garbage items are collected and sent by boat to the waste disposal site in Suva.

Oneta Vegetable Garden

We have a wonderful farm-to-table garden that provides most of the fresh vegetables and salad items at Oneta. Fruit trees and pineapple plants can be found throughout the resort and those provide most of the fruit for our guests. We do have to compete with the fruit bats during mango season but there is usually plenty to go around.

Water Systems

Most of our grey water runs back into the ground to water nearby plants. Our use of biodegradable Pure Fiji products helps keep harmful chemicals from building up.

We use septic systems throughout the resort which at this point show no negative impact on land or sea. We are also working with a wastewater consultant for a plan for future upgrades as the resort grows to ensure that there will continue to be no effect on the local environment.

Environmental Preservation

We do our best to offer a great outer island experience while having as little impact on our beautiful surroundings as possible. On land that means using as many sustainable materials in our construction as possible and minimizing single use plastic products. You won’t find any plastic water bottles or straws at Oneta. We also hold regular beach cleanups around Ono to pick up any plastics that wash ashore. On the water we try to keep our dive and snorkel groups small to lessen the impact of our presence and our dive instructors and snorkel guides are trained to make sure that we do not damage the reef in any way. We encourage our guests to be equally vigilant as they dive and snorkel so that there is no inadvertent negative effect to the reef because of fins or other physical contact. Reef friendly sunscreen is also essential and we provide that to guests who are unable to bring their own. With sport fishing, we are vigilant in returning the catch to the sea whenever possible.

Marine Conservation Efforts at Oneta

The preservation of the ocean and all of its amazing life is front and center at Oneta. We do our best to to protect this beautiful ecosystem and contribute to its health any way we can. We are currently setting up a nursery for giant clams which are a keystone species for any reef. Giant clams contribute to water clarity, coral health, coral reef growth and support vital algae that are essential to the reef. We are currently waiting for 200 giant clam seedlings to be delivered from the Ministry of Fisheries to be safely housed in a secluded area in front of the resort.

Starting in the month of July 2024 our guests will be able to assist in our coral reef conservation efforts by adopting a coral colony. Our diving guests will be able to sign up to sponsor these colonies in local nurseries. In time, the mature corals are then relocated to neighboring reefs that might be in need.

Kitchen Waste Creates Bio Gas at Oneta

Three Homebiogas 7.0 systems were installed at Oneta Resort to transform kitchen waste into renewable cooking gas now being used in our staff kitchen. Each unit weighs more than 4 tons once filled with liquid and can absorb 18kg of organic waste daily. The 3 digester tanks contain anaerobic bacteria that provide 24h of clean cooking gas. It also creates an amazing organic liquid fertilizer for use in our vegetable farm and orchard. Thanks to the expertise of Eco Grow Fiji and to the whole Oneta team, the biogas project has been a great success for sustainable living at Oneta. For more information on these systems please check out Eco Grow facebook page:

Sustainable Housekeeping and Laundry Practices

Cleanliness and hygiene are as essential at Oneta as they are anywhere else. For all of our housekeeping, cleaning and laundry needs, we try to use effective and innovative cleaning bio-products to reduce our environmental footprint. Our cleaning and disinfectant products are biodegradable within 28 days and do not contain any alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs) that can be detrimental for aquatic life. The Diversey product line complies with OECD Guidelines. Learn more about the Diversey products by clicking on the butoon below to get to their website

Additionally we only change and wash the bedding and towels every three days unless otherwise requested. We also dry laundry in the sun instead of in the dryer as much as possible.

Ono Island Bees making Oneta Honey

We recently enlisted a group of friendly local bees to become part of the Oneta community. They had wanted to settle into the wall of one of our bures but we kindly encouraged them to make their home in a Langstroth hive instead. The bees play a vital role in the pollination of our vegetable garden and our eco-farm and they support the growth of local flora. We hope to harvest our first honey later this year. Our on-site beekeepers will be delighted to introduce you to the complex and fascinating world of bees.

Sustainable Community

We believe that the success of Oneta Resort is tied to the strength of the communities around us, so we do what we can to support the villages of the larger Ono community. We work in partnership with local leadership to find projects that we can contribute to that create positive change in our area. For example, we secured building supplies and food aid for the Ono community in the aftermath of Cyclone Harold. We also delivered food assistance during Covid years and currently, there are many educational projects at the local schools that we contribute to. The resort works hand in hand with the Oneta Foundation to raise money for these efforts.

For more information on our work in the Ono area please go to onetafoundation.org

Guests are welcome to help in any or all of these efforts to participate within the larger Ono community.

Pick a project through the Oneta Foundation and support it with a donation. Another great way to contribute is to bring supplies for the local schools.
